Shipping Container Specifications

  • The ISO stated actual internal length of a 12m is 12032mm, we find that 11850mm is the safe length to assume for certainty of fitting cargo
  • Designed and built for intermodal freight transport, these containers can be used across different modes of transport – ie ship, barge, rail, truck
  • On size alone, up to 95% of intermodal containers comply with ISO standards and can officially be called ISO containers; so sizes do vary slightly.
  • Containers Must have a valid CSC Certified plate for use (see plate affixed to front) and that GP and HC containers are wwt (wind and water tight)
  • Other types of containers exist: Refrigerated, Tank-tainers, Port Hole Containers, Hard-top Containers, Bolsters, Side Opening Containers etc
  • Containers have a 4 alphabetic letter prefix (eg MSCU) where the first 3 letters are the Owner (eg shipping line) and the U stands for freight container.
  • Followed by a 7 digit numeric number. The first 6 are it’s registration number, the 7th (in a box) is the check digit to aid identification.
